The earthquake which shook Kashmir Sunday-Monday midnight had its origin in Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan.
The epicenter of the quake was located about 300 kilometers from Kabul and about 90 kilometers below the surface, the USGS reported Sunday. No casualties were reported. Tremors were felt in Pakistan and north India, including Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. It was almost 81 km deep inside the mountainous region.
For many in Pakistan, October's quake brought back traumatic memories of a 7.6-magnitude quake that struck in October 2005, killing more than 75,000 people and displacing some 3.5 million.
Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
There have been mild earthquakes shaking Kashmir region for some time now. People are deep asleep when the earthquake hit Kashmir. No loss of property or life has been reported.
